This system is just one component of the mechanical masterpiece that we call the human body. When impacted or put under enough stress, this system, as any mechanical system, can break down and become injured.

Standard practice to prevent injury or protect injured joints is to use static or rigid materials to restrict movement. On the surface level, static or rigid materials may seem to be safe solutions; however, when you consider how the musculoskeletal system was designed to work, these “solutions” can have negative long-term effects on the body as a whole. For instance, consider how applying static materials (such as tape or nylon) to a dynamic joint, like the ankle, not only restricts the affected joint’s ability to perform but also increases stress on the unaffected knee and hip. Many joints are dynamic, not static. When the stress of injury is not minimized but redistributed, how is the body able to make a full recovery or perform at its best? We refer to this as a deferral of risk along the kinetic chain. Not only does this deferral of risk transfer impact to other joints, but it also keeps athletes from maximizing their performance.
